Recess Before Lunch

(or “a picture is worth a thousand words!”)

For those of you who have worked playground duty in the past, you will remember how the middle tray on the clean up cart would fill with almost full milk cartons as children would take one or two quick sips and then run out to recess. I believe this picture of the tray today explains how well Recess Before Lunch is working out. Truly this is one of those, “Why didn’t we think of this before?” ideas. The children are eager to go outside, and when it is time to come in, they come in, sit down and get right to eating their lunches. We are seeing less waste, because everyone gets the same amount of time on the playground. I have noticed that the children are not throwing half-eaten food away because they want to get outside. Another plus I have noticed is that they get their heart rates down, stop sweating and get back in to calm mode before going back to their classrooms. This seems to help them settle down to their school work when they return. We don’t see the spillover of recess arguments or cries of “unfair!” from playground incidents either. All in all, the experiment is working out.  I know some of you are looking for heat-ups to return, and we are working on the logistics of that, but otherwise, what do you think?  Do you have any thoughts to share? Add them to the comments or drop me a line. We’ll see what we can do.

Newspaper Clippings

Our intrepid photographer Mary Ellen Rosiak has managed to have some great action photos published in both the News Herald and News Messenger papers today. The photos are also available online. Follow these links:

What to wear, what to wear?

Our school uniform policy is currently posted in the Parent Information page. Please use it for reference when shopping for your child. At St. Boniface School we believe that clothing reflects an attitude. The right clothes do not necessarily indicate personal holiness any more than the wrong clothes indicate carelessness. They do, however, help in both indicating and instilling a state of mind or attitude that says we set higher expectations for ourselves. When we dress in uniform we are effectively saying we are dressed for a purpose. Our school uniform encourages students to focus on self-expression through a student’s skills and talents and not on self-expression through material goods.

If you have clean, gently used clothing your child has outgrown and would like to pass along to another child, please drop it off at the school office any time next week. You are also welcome to look through the clothing we currently have to see if it will help you out. Anything we can do to help each other out is to all of our benefit.
